I found a great way to save a ton of money on the scheduled maintenance on your new cars and trucks.

My wife and I purchased a brand new Toyota 4Runner last year and we absolutely love everything about it. The only thing I dreaded about purchasing a new vehicle was taking it in for scheduled maintenance. It seems to be a scheme of dealerships to charge you an arm and a leg to do things to your vehicle that isn’t really necessary.

So, when it came time for the scheduled 15,000 mile maintenance on the 4Runner I was expecting to spend anywhere from $200 to $400 for this. After reading several online forums and founding out about these prices I called Toyota Of Melbourne to inquire as to 1. What do you do for the scheduled maintenance and 2. How much is it going to cost me?

Holding my owner’s manual as I spoke with a service rep on the phone I was surprised to find out all the additional "recommended" maintenance items from the dealer vs what Toyota recommends on their web site. After my inquiry on the phone I learned that the 15,000 mile maintenance for my 4Runner was going to cost $249. The dealer had added things like changing the transmission fluid and decarbonization of the fuel injectors, things not recommended by Toyota corporate.

So I called and made an appointment and this morning, with my owners manual in hand, I drove to Toyota Of Melbourne and said all I wanted done was the maintenance recommended by my owner’s manual and nothing else. I was expecting to pay a round $100 or so but was shocked to see my invoice come to only $27! I saved nearly 10 times what it would have cost me just by insisting they do only the Toyota recommended items. I do want to say though that my service rep was very courteous and never pressured me in any way.

So, there’s the moral of the story. The way to save money, and lots of it, on your scheduled maintenance is to call your dealer, ask them what do they do, what do they charge and then have them do only what’s recommended in your owner’s manual.

It really can’t get any simpler than that.

Jaguar has made a hit (at least with me) with their somewhat newly redesigned XK. The XK looks a lot like the Aston Martin Vantage but is a little less pricey.

The new XK has an all aluminum one piece body (don’t wreck it) that weighs 200 lbs less than last years model and 400 lbs less than a Mercedes SL550. The advantage of this one piece lighter body is that it is 31% more rigid which basically means that you can go around corners much faster. It also increases gas mileage and increases acceleration.

Acceleration is great, but I don’t know if people that can afford a car like this really care all that much about gas mileage. If you can afford a car that has a base price of $75,000 three-dollar-a-gallon gas isn’t that much of a concern.

The standard engine is a 4.2L V8 with a six speed automatic transmission that produces 300 hp, but I assume later this year we will see a XK-R with the supercharged 400 hp V8.

The new XK is a beautiful looking sports car at a hefty price but if I’m going to spend this kind of money for a car, I want performance, serious performance. I’d wait for the R version.

I used to like Nissan automobiles and always wanted a Nissan Maxima, that is until the designers at Nissan destroyed the interior of this once fine sports sedan.

One of the nicest things about the interior was that white with black lettering instrument panel and dials. This panel dates back to the late ’80 and had a mesmerizing effect on its drivers. I know, a friend of mine who owned a Maxima was in danger of losing his license because he had so many speeding tickets. Every time I sat in a pre 2004 Maxima I had this uncontrollable urge to stomp the gas pedal to the floor. I’m sure it was due to that instrument panel.

Then there is the console. What was once a sleek looking place for the shifter, radio and controls has been turned into a cold looking industrial, techno, lifeless monolith. Just look at the hideous piece of workmanship where you control various functions of the automobile that make your ride more pleasant. The slot where you insert your CD’s looks more like a time clock that you would be punching if you were holding down a job at a work camp in Siberia.

I want something that looks and feels comfortable, not makes me feel like a prisoner in my own vehicle.

Therefore, I bestow upon the Nissan Maxima the Ugly Interior Award.

Not too many people survive a car crash at 162 mph. Stefan Eriksson did, but now he is under arrest for possibly stealing the Ferrari Enzo he trashed valued at more than $1 million.

Eriksson wrecked the Ferrari on February 20th and told police a far fetched story about a mystery driver named Dietrich that ran off into the surrounding hills after the crash. Eriksson claimed he was just the innocent passenger in the car. A 3 hour search for Dietrich turned up unfruitful, big surprise.

Back in March Eriksson’s wife had a Mercedes SLR McLaren (as featured on the masthead of Cars And Car Reviews) impounded for improper exportation from Britain.

All I can say is WOW! Imagine being so rich you can wrack-up $1.5 million worth of legal troubles in less than 2 months. Most people will never see $1.5 million in their entire lifetime and Mr Stefan Eriksson and his wife just lost that amount in exotic automobiles plus I’m sure it will cost them millions to get out of their legal hassles.

You think people with that kind of money would be a little smarter.

The new BMW Z4 M Roadster is slated to hit showrooms sometime within the next week and it is sure to be a hit with BMW enthusiasts everywhere. The Z4 M is the big brother to the Z3 M with 330 hp in it’s 24 valve inline 6. Not bad for a car that weighs in at under 3,200 lbs.

The engineers at BMW basically took the M3 engine and dropped it into a the Z4, a much lighter vehicle creating a recipe for speed and more fun. A six-speed manual short throw ZF transmission adds to the thrills.

The Z4 is in the same league with the Porsche Boxter and the Mercedes SLK AMG, its two main competitors. 

Performance is quick with zero to sixty time at 4.9 seconds and a governor limited top speed of 155. Pricing starts at $51,995

Who isn’t a fan of the super fast supercar. (Hey, that sounds like a line from Shaft)Superfast would be defined as speeds above 200 mph and there are only a few cars in the world that have been built to exceed the 200 mph barrier. Cars that exceed that barrier also exceed the wallet barrier for all except the super rich who can afford to spend more than $250,000 and sometimes over $1,000,000 on something to drive.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is one of those rarefied examples of a car that most of us can only fantasize about. Tipping the cash register at a whopping $1.7 million for the 2006 version, most people would have to start a software company that makes the most used operating system on the planet and give billions to charity before we could justify owning one.

If you want fast though, and that’s what we’re talking about here, the Veyron is exotic fast. Faster than most cars that have ever set 4 tires on the track at Indy. We’re talking 253 mph fast. The Callaway Sledgehammer came in at 254 mph in 1988 but there’s only one of those and the speed wasn’t officially documented. The Veyron is a production car. Well, if you call 70 copies a year production.

Why is a car like this so expensive you ask. For starters you can’t just order parts from your local Autozone for a vehicle like this, everything has to be custom made, custom made to withstand 253 mph. What kind of expensive custom made parts go into the Veyron? How about 16 cylinders, 10 radiators, 4 turbochargers, and a huge 8 liter engine. It also has Michelin tires made specifically for the Veyron.

Not only does the Veyron go 253 mph it gets there quick too. Zero to 60 time is 3 seconds and 0 to 150 mph is an amazing 11 seconds.

There are a reported 14 Veyrons to be for sale in the United States so get your orders in early, that is if you have the $1.7 million to buy one.

So who gets to test drive one of these?

I grew up in the 60′s and started driving back in the mid 70′s so cars from the late 60′s and early 70′s were the first ones I was looking at when I started to drive. Some of the more sought after cars were the 1969 Camaro, the 1970 Roadrunner and of course the 1970 Challenger and Barracuda.

Well, I was quite excited when I first read the news that Dodge was reintroducing the Challenger once again with their announcement of the Challenger concept car. After seeing pictures of it I thought, now that I can afford a new car, I had to have one of these.

I actually saw a picture of the Challenger first before I read anything about it and thought it was a Barracuda, although Plymouth is now defunct. It reminds me more of a Barracuda than a Challenger. The rear end looks more like the Barracuda of the 70′s and the new concept car is sans that hideous vinyl top included on the 1970 Challenger.

Unfortunately this sweet little nostalgic ride won’t be in showrooms until 2008 so there isn’t any info on price or performance at present. I guess it’s just going to be something us 70′s muscle car fans will have to wait for.
